WRITING ABOUT MUSICAL MOOD

Lessons 1-5

Week 1

  • Students listen to a short piece of music and write about the musical mood. Students are asked to include a personal connection and supporting evidence using the Summative Writing Assessment.
  • The teacher introduces writing about musical mood as the theme of this new writing unit. The following acronym is introduced: WAMM=MP3, which means Writing About Musical Mood = Mood, Personal connection, and 3 musical elements such as tempo, dynamics and instrumentation.

Week 2

  • Students look at and discuss “Mood” as the “M” of MP3 in WAMM=MP3 using the Mood Topic Sentence Template and Rubric.
  • Students play Musical Boggle (Mood) to generate a list of musical mood words.
  • Students listen to a music excerpt and use mood words to complete the Mood Topic Sentence Template and Rubric.

 

Week 3

  • Move & Match Game (Mood) - Students move to posted mood words around the room to match the mood of various recorded musical excerpts.
  • Students listen to a music excerpt and complete the Mood Topic Sentence Template and Rubric to self-assess and revise their work.

 

Week 4

  • Students look at and discuss “Personal connection” as the “P” of MP3 using the Personal Connection Sentence Template and Rubric.
  • Students listen to a music excerpt and write about the mood in a complete sentence using the Mood Topic Sentence Checklist to self-assess and revise their work, and complete the Personal Connection Sentence Template and Rubric.

 

Week 5

  • Students look at and discuss tempo as one “3” musical elements of MP3.
  • Move & Match Game (Tempo) - Students move to posted tempo words around the room to match the tempo of various recorded musical excerpts.
  • Students listen to a music excerpt, then write about the musical mood and a personal connection using the Mood and Personal Connection Checklist to self-assess and revise their work, and complete the Tempo Sentence Template and Rubric.
