WRITING ABOUT MUSICAL MOOD

Lessons 10-16 

Weeks 10-11

  • Students look at and discuss instrumentation as one “3” musical elements of MP3.
  • Move & Match Game (Instrumentation) - Students move to posted voice and/or instrument signs (e.g., solo/ensemble, singing (men/women/children), orchestral families, world instrument categories, specific instruments) around the room to match the instruments of various recorded music excerpts.
  • Students listen to a music excerpt, then write about the musical mood, a personal connection, tempo and dynamics in complete sentences, using the Mood, Personal Connection, Tempo and Dynamics Checklist to self-assess and revise their work, and complete the Instrumentation Sentence Template and Rubric.

 

Weeks 12-13

  • Move & Match Game (Instrumentation) - Students move to posted voice and/or instrument signs (e.g., orchestral families, world instrument categories, specific instruments) around the room to match the instruments of various recorded music excerpts.
  • Students listen to a music excerpt, then using a graphic organizer, write about the musical mood, a personal connection, tempo, dynamics and instrumentation in complete sentences, using the Musical Mood Writing Checklist to self-assess and revise their work.

 

Week 14-15

  • Slap Element – Students are divided into small groups and given a stack of cards which contain words to musical elements, e.g. tempo words such as “allegro” and “racing” and dynamic words such as “piano” and “loud”. Students deal out the cards, then take turns slapping words that belong to the given category, for example tempo words.
  • Students listen to a music excerpt, then using a blank, lined sheet of paper, complete the Final Formative Writing Prompt. Students use the Musical Mood Writing Rubric to self-assess and revise their work.

 

Week 16

  • Students listen to a music excerpt, then using the Summative Writing Assessment, write about the musical mood using the MP3 formula.
