Weeks 1-3

Civil Rights Exploration & Applying Tableau

Prior Knowledge: Students were familiar with the process of tableau and had developed an initial Tableau Rubric in the previous unit. They had also been introduced to a peer feedback process to inform their revisions.

Students are introduced to historical texts and images from the Civil Rights Movement. To build their empathy for and deepen their understanding of the issues, students engage in collaborative discussions about issues of racism, discrimination, and protest based their readings and personal experiences. They explore this material through initial tableau work and apply previously generated Tableau Criteria: levels, focus, facial expression, and gesture. Students are introduced to technology component as they record their paired tableau work on the iPads and they experiment with the Explain Everything App to document their feedback and revision process. Students self-assess based on criteria and set individual rehearsal goals in their Theater Journals.
