Building on their new criteria for drawing an expressive portrait, students created a second sketch:

2nd sketches

In the next lesson, students were introduced to oil pastels and explored their unique properties. In a class brainstorming session, students closely observed Lucien Freud’s self-portrait and were asked to consider how artists use tints and shades to create the illusion of dimension and volume. Their observations were added to their portrait criteria. Students used these new criteria to determine a light source in their portraits and proceeded to add tints and shades.
